Last week New College Stamford officially launched our new Air and Defence Career College. We were joined by Stamford Mayor Cllr Tony Story, RAF Wittering and of course our staff and students for a celebration in our Gallery Restaurant.
The Career College provides employer-led, career focused education and technical training for 16 to 19 year olds. We offer three pathway courses over multiple levels, developed from current skills gaps in the Air and Defence Industry – Computer Science, Catering and Public Services.
Studies are split between vocational learning and military training, and students can experience placements which offer a valuable insight into military life.
Mayor Tony Story, gave an inspirational speech in which he explained his personal experiences in the RAF, when he served as a photographer for 22 years!
He explained “I was in the RAF myself and I know they have always been the best, most modern and most comprehensive. I loved my time in the force, the travel, the lifestyle and the feeling of being part of a close group of people. But there is far more than a life in the forces than that – service prepares you for a life in any career, and service personnel are always in demand once they have left the forces.”
Group Captain Tony Keeling, station commander at RAF Wittering, also gave a speech at the launch, he said ‘this a great opportunity for us and New College Stamford as we already have great ties with each other. We are benefiting not only the students in a context of a career but always encouraging them to get out and do something whilst learning, which will make them more employable! For us it is also a link to recruit more students for the future of the Royal Air Force’.
Our special guests and staff were then treated to a three course meal cooked, prepared and served by Catering and Hospitality students in our on-site restaurant – The Gallery Kitchen.
