Ashley Bond will visit Africa as part of his University course and intends to take a suitcase of extra sports kit and equipment for the kids of Tanzania!

One of our recently graduated BTEC Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science students is now studying in his second year studying BSc (Honours) Sport Development at Coaching at Sheffield Hallam University. As part of his degree, he has to complete an eight-week work placement during May and June 2019. Ashley has been successful in obtaining a work placement as a ‘Sport Development Assistant’ with Arusha Youth Development Organisation which is a sport based community organisation in Tanzania, East Africa.

The placement will involve him coaching, assisting, educating, organising and developing sport and the community in a variety of settings; within schools, after school activities, community groups and training workshops. Specifically delivering sport-specific activities such as football, netball and volleyball as well as multi-sports and multi-skill activities. Whilst he is in Arusha and the surrounding villages of Tanzania, he will be responsible for coaching the local junior football teams as they prepare to enter the East Africa Cup football tournament. Furthermore, he will be responsible and open to spotting further local opportunities where helping individuals or the community with such things as fundraising initiatives or building projects can be accomplished.

This eight week placement he will take part in next year is a voluntary one and therefore self-funded. One of his first aims of his placement is to take an extra suitcase to fly over with him filled with sports equipment, kit and anything that would be beneficial to use and leave with the children and staff that I meet whilst over in Tanzania.

Ashely approached the sports department at New College Stamford and asked if any current students or staff would have any spare/old equipment or kit that they would be willing to give away, knowing that it will be given to young children or even adults who have very little whom would be made up with anything such as a football or of sports clothing (t-shirt, boots, socks, anything)! New College Stamford Sports department was more than happy to help Ashley with this brilliant cause and supplied him with a load of football kits and tops (which can be seen in the picture below)!

Ashely mentioned that “if it wasn’t for my time at college I wouldn’t be at university and in turn, would not have this once in a lifetime opportunity to work abroad delivering and developing sport for two months in Arusha, Tanzania!” We are all so proud of our Alumni students that are moving on and going onto to do amazing things world-wide! Ashley travels in May, and would be so grateful if anyone could support him to reach his funding goal!
