This course has been designed to provide you with a broad introduction to the business sector and develop basic skills such as; communication, working with others, problem solving, managing information and self development. You will develop transferable skills and understanding through; organising a meeting, branding a product, creating a visual display, contributing to running an event, recording income and expendiature and presenting a business idea.

You will undertake one weeks’ worth of week experience which is related to a working in a retail environment which requires customer service. This offers the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills along with scope for developing skills for working in the retail sector Business providers in the past have included leading retail outlets, banks and charity shops. Alternatively, there is an internal-work experience programme that is run inside the college working in several departments within the college over 1 week.

The course is designed to inspire, build and develop your transferable skills providing a sound platform for further course study and increased employability. The course will include engaging business activities, trips, projects and teamwork. Enrichment activities may include: Participation in the National Citizens Service Half Term programme (which is part residential) and designed to develop team work skills, project design and running of a local event. A customer-service orientated trip to Cadburys World, Alton Towers or Sacrewell Farm. They all offer interesting and present-day marketing lectures, activities and experiential learning. Engaging guest lecturers delivering topics relating to office practice, presentation skills and work-based learning.

The content of the course and units offer a broad introduction to the skills and knowledge within business allowing the delivery to be practical and active in order to engage the students; for example: role-playing customer service situations, pitching business ideas and creating visual displays.

On successful completion of this course you can progress to a Business, Creative Media, IT or Travel and Tourism Diploma Level 2, or a Customer Service Practitioner Apprenticeship, or enter employment.

This qualification prepares students for progression to Level 2 BTECs or other study programmes. All course units are assessed internally using a variety of assessment methods.

They may be required to:

• present information that they have gathered

• keep working logbooks, records and reflective journals

• practise English and mathematical skills

• take part in oral or written presentations

• take part in role play, interviews and other activities.

No formal entry requirements.
