This course provides an excellent grounding for those wishing to build a career as a make-up artist. You will gain a diverse and essential set of skills you need to start any make up career. You will explore:

  • Applying make up
  • Face painting
  • Body art
  • Eye treatments
  • Cutting and plaiting hair
  • Photographic make up

You will have regular visits from industry professionals throughout the course such as visits from Charles Fox, London (with the opportunity to visit their training salon in Covent Garden), UK body painters and special effects experts, as well as successful past students now working in industry. You will also have the opportunity to compete in regional and national competitions such as the AHT Hair and Make-Up Awards, and showcase your skills in our End of Year Hair and Fashion Show.

This course is approximately 30% theory and 70% practical.

You will learn through practical demonstrationsin our recently refurbished professional make up studio.

You will be expect to complete a minimum of 120 hours work experience throughout this course. 60 hours of your work experience will be completed in a hairdressing salon or other hair outlet the other 60 hours will be dedicated to experiencing the make up industry.

 

After successful completion of this course you will be able to progress on to Theatrical, Special Effects Hair and Media Make up Diploma Level 3 or enter employment.

Each unit will have at least one written assignments and several practical assessments and end of unit tests.

You will also need to purchase kit and uniform for this course which will be added to throughout the year and will be expected to source clients for practical learning.

4 GCSEs at grades D or above, including English, maths and science at grades C/4 or above, or a relevant Level 1 qualification.

You will study a range of units including:

• The art of hair dressing

• The art of photographic make-up

• Apply make-up

• Client care and communication in beauty-related industries

• Follow health and safety practice in the salon

• Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector

Optional:

• Colour hair using temporary colour

• Client consultation for hair services

• Provide eyelash and brow treatments

• Body art design

• Cut women’s hair

• Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp

• Themed face painting

• Plaiting and twisting
