This course is designed for people looking to work in the music industry as a performer. You will gain an understanding of rehearsal skills, solo music performance and group performance, music production, basic recording skills and the music business to develop your skills as a self-employed musician/freelancer.

To give you a real experience of the current UK music industry you will have the opportunity to visit venues such as Rock City, BBC Radio, Rutland Radio, local gigs and festivals such as The Willow Festival and Stamford Willows Festival. You will also meet a variety of professionals from the music industry and visit different music trade shows such as BPM and PLAZA to inspire your artistic development.

You will study the following units:

• Using a keyboard with a DAW

• Live music performance

• Session musician

• Planning for a career and getting work in music

• Life sound recording

• Music rehearsal skills

• Music improvisation

• Radio and podcast production


You will be working both alone and in small groups in our state of the art rehearsal rooms. Much of your time will be spent preparing material for performances and assessments. There is an expectation that you will carry out individual study outside of your scheduled timetable. Practical assessments take place at local music venues in order to give you real world experience of working in the industry.

On successful completion of this course, you can progress to the HNC/ HND in Music at University Centre Stamford or other music degrees at university. You could also progress to careers such as a Live Sound Engineer, Music Promoter, Music Manager, or Session Musician.

There are no exams for this course. Students build a portfolio of work for each of the units and complete written assignments.

You will need to purchase an equipment pack at the start of the year costing £30. Units subject to change. You will also be able to participate in running the of the College radio station and record label where you can release your own music through major online retailers such as iTunes. 5 GCSEs at grades 4/C or above preferably including English and maths, or a Merit in a relevant Level 2 Diploma. You will also be required to audition with your instrument of choice at interview.
