Ex Catering and Hospitality student, Shaun Mason recently returned to New College Stamford with his impressive CV, to judge the Springboard Future Chef Competition.
After leaving New College Stamford, Shaun went on to work for Rick Stein and Buckingham Palace, and his role with the Royal Household saw him cater for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton and he even cooked for President Obama! Shaun met most members of the royal family, traveling across the country to work in other places such as Sandringham and Balmoral, preparing functions and banquets for 200 to 1000 people!
Shaun worked at the Palace for 4 years and received recognition when he was awarded His Royal Highness the Prince’s Annual Award of excellence.
Shaun said, “The training I gained at New College Stamford was brilliant. Our industry lecturers teach you the key skills required by top employers, and these helped me out a tremendous amount. Employers could recognise the excellent experience I had acquired from my time at college”.
During his studies at New College Stamford Shaun was able to experience many real life opportunities within the Catering and Hospitality industry, such as supporting a charity banquet at the Savoy Hotel, London.
Such work experience opportunities and vocational training provides our students with the real skills they need to succeed within competitive industries, just like Shaun did. He now owns his own pub/restaurant, The Angel in South Witham, and plays the role of both Landlord and Head Chef.
Shaun was able to share his top tips for success with students who took part in the Springboard Future Chef Competition school heats. The competition gave students the chance to actively enhance their skills in our industry standard kitchen whilst competing for the opportunity to progress to the national Future Chef finals in London.
