OBE for former New College Stamford Principal

Former New College Stamford Principal Miles Dibsdall has been awarded the OBE for Services to Further and Higher Education in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list this week.

Acting Principal at New College Stamford Lavinia Robinson was one of the first to congratulate her former colleague. Mrs Robinson said; “The staff, students and Governors of New College Stamford are delighted to hear Miles’ news. It is a great honour and we are very proud of his achievement.”

Mr Dibsdall now Principal of Edinburgh’s Telford’s College, was quick to point out the contribution of his former colleagues. Mr Dibsdall said; “Whilst this is a great personal honour it wouldn’t have been possible without the achievements and efforts of a great team of people at New College Stamford. I hope that the students, staff and Governors at the College share in my delight as my award was only made possible by their support.”

Miles Dibsdall

New College Stamford Principal Miles Dibsdall has been appointed as the new Principal and Chief Executive at Edinburgh’s Telford College.

In his 3½ years at New College, Miles, whose dynamic leadership was formally commented on in a recent OFSTED report, developed the College significantly, in the range and choice of courses offered. Under his leadership, New College won a Beacon award for its partnership working and has seen a record growth in student numbers.

Miles said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at New College Stamford and together with a dedicated team of governors, staff, learners and colleagues we have made some significant developments. New College is in a strong financial position, with new facilities, curricula and resources and with a phased multi million pound development starting in April the College is set for further and greater success.  I would like to thank everyone for their support I have made some great friends here and I wish everyone well. However, I have been offered a fantastic new and exciting opportunity at Edinburgh’s Telford College that I can’t turn down and I am now looking forward to working with them to help them realise their ambitions.”

Chair of Governors at New College Stamford Pat Friend said;”On behalf of everyone involved with New College Stamford we would like to wish Miles every success. He has had an enormously positively impact on not just the College but the region as a whole and he will be greatly missed. He is a committed, effective and determined leader who has firmly put New College Stamford on the map. Our very best wishes go with him and his new career. New College Stamford will continue to go from strength to strength and build on the outstanding successes of its learners and staff.”

Stamford Travel benefits as part of multi million development scheme

Stamford Travel the High Street Travel Agency managed by New College Stamford is relocating its business to brand new premises as part of a multi million pound phase development of the College’s main Drift Road campus. The ABTA & ATOL protected agency is a member of the Freedom Travel Group and part of Co-Operative Travel. The agency will continue to offer its full service, open and honest advice and the widest choice of holidays in Stamford as works are completed.

College Principal Miles Dibsdall said; “We wanted to support the Stamford High Street during the height of the recession and initially provided a one-stop-shop for the community to pick up and receive advice and guidance on education and training courses during this difficult economic period. The response was amazing. Applications for our full-time courses are already up by 18% on last year’s figures-itself a record year. We are working successfully with local businesses and community groups on an array of project and initiatives across the country and Stamford Travel was integrated into our High Street operation as part of this. Now that we are moving to recovery it’s time to allow a retailer to move into the High Street. There are really exciting developments in the retail sector and Stamford is attracting new shops which provide yet more choice to the rich shopping experience that is unique to Stamford.

However, Stamford Travel has successfully served its purpose as a commercial high street venture and will return to be part of our new main campus developments as originally planned. Stamford Travel has a core base of clients whose needs will be serviced and met at its' original premises with work scheduled on the new facility scheduled for completion by September 2010. New College Stamford is committed to support Stamford and is expanding its educational offer accordingly. The College’s multi million pound phase new build is further evidence that these are exciting times for the college of choice for Stamford, Rutland and Peterborough.”

Euro Funding Helps Young Stamford Woman Shine PDF Print E-mail

A young Lincolnshire woman is benefiting from a European-funded project which has boosted her confidence so much she’s landed a new job.
Kaylie Bower, 21, now has even brighter career prospects thanks to a project run by New College Stamford, which aims to transform job hunting skills and lift people’s confidence.  Both of which has helped Kaylie get her job at Homebase within just two months of starting the course.
The project, called Employment finder service youth programme, is funded by £900,000 the European Social Fund 2007-13 (ESF) and the Learning and Skills Council East Midlands. ESF is investing £376 million overall to boost skills and jobs in the region.

Kaylie said, “I had been looking for a part-time job for a few years, and I found out about this project a couple of months after I completed an IT course. “I went to see the tutor and she explained how the course could help me.  Straight away they helped me sign on for a Jobseeker’s Allowance.

“I had no confidence at all before, but they helped with all sorts of things – from CV and letter writing, how to search on job sites, to getting my hair right for an interview.  On my second interview I got my job at Homebase in Stamford, and am doing well with a performance rating of 90 per cent. “

Glenn Powell, implementation manager at New College Stamford, said “Young people, who are not in work, nor in education or training, often find it difficult to get to grips with the range of options available to them in the educational and employment sectors.  This project seeks to simplify the options available.  “Contrary to popular belief, the majority of young adults who come to us who have not got a job, nor are in training or education, are well-behaved, motivated and as keen as their peers to grasp available education and employment opportunities. They just need a little more help along the way.”

Sir Alan Sugar says you’re hired!

Promotion has high on the agenda to help raise the profile of Apprenticeships, and Sir Alan Sugar, the businessman-turned-celebrity has helped 2008 become a record year for Apprenticeships. Figures announced this week show that a quarter of a million new apprentices started in England last year, and the number has more than trebled in the last 20 years. However, it still falls short of government targets, which wants one in five young people to take up an Apprenticeship.

The National Apprenticeship Service (NAS), which was officially launched this week and has the responsibility to drive forward this ambition. The NAS reports to the Departments for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) and Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), and encourages more employers to offer apprenticeship places. Recently the Skills Commission reported that although the number of apprentices is rising, only 130,000 businesses out of 1.3m actually take them on.

There are 180 types of Apprenticeships available in 80 sectors, which range from Agriculture to Retail - with a large provision in Construction and New College Stamford can provide the specialist information and guidance needed for individuals looking to become an apprentice or for businesses looking to employ one.

Emma Yorke, Head of Business Development at New College Stamford said “Unlike the BBC TV’s version of the Apprentice there is more than one winner with an apprenticeship programme. We work closely to match employers with the right apprenticeship placement and provide close monitoring and support to ensure that both parties get the very best out of the experience.”

The profile of apprenticeships is set to increase further as the government announced plans to pass new legislation to ensure that schools include apprenticeships when giving information concerning pupil’s future options, and it has started a programme of teacher briefing sessions.

For more information about apprenticeships visit www.stamford.ac.uk/business or www.apprenticeships.org.uk or call 01780 484300 ext 675.
