National Success for New College Stamford students

New College Stamford received international acclaim this week when graphic design student Stanley Ashton, 18 achieved second place in the UK “Design Against Fur” student design competition.

The event was part of Respect for Animals project which celebrates award-winning UK students with an exhibition of brand new artworks using the popular medium of the advertising poster. “Design Against Fur” provides students with an opportunity to produce a thought provoking, creative campaign poster that delivers a compassionate animal protection message

Four first year Interactive Media students from New College Stamford were shortlisted in the national finals and had their artwork exhibited at the dreamspace gallery in London www.adrem.uk.com/dreamspace . Stanley was joined in the final judging by New College Stamford finalists Ben Hinton age 16, Jevon Parker age 16 and Jason Veitch age 18. Jason Veitch won a special award for his submission.

The UK round is part of the annual international DAF competition, other rounds include China, Europe & International and Russia.

College tutor Yvonne Davison-Clissit said;” I am so proud of the students. It was remarkable achievement to have 4 finalists in the top 18 and to nearly walk away with the top award was simply amazing.”
The exhibition is open during the London Design Festival from Monday 21 September to Friday 25 September 2009, between 9.00am and 5.30pm. The exhibition space is open Monday to Friday throughout September.

Lessons from Auschwitz

Two students from New College Stamford were honoured to be chosen to participate in a recent national project - Lessons from Auschwitz. The project is run by the Holocaust Education trust and is designed to involve young people in the issues and debates surrounding racism and its consequences. The project has four key parts - an orientation seminar, a visit to Auschwitz Birkenau, a debrief and a subsequent project to take place in the College. The project will allow the students to pass on to others some of the lessons they have learnt from going to Auschwitz.
