Three New College Stamford students have qualified for the British Colleges Sport National Championships to be held in Newcastle in April 2016.
Two mini buses left New College Stamford bound for Morley Hayes in Derbyshire taking four students to compete in the Regional Golf Championships, and for Lincoln College where the Regional Trampolining and Squash Championships were taking place.
The Regional Golf tournament was held at Morley Hayes, a well-kept hotel and two course site for amateurs and professionals. Morley Hayes is also the base for Derby College’s Golf Academy so it provided tough competition.
Yet 18 holes later New College Stamford student Calum Lewis came up the last green and rolled the ball home, he looked confident and then said “I nailed a 75” – on a course that he’d never played before and against Academy players!
Calum produced the best score of the day to win the tournament and progress to the BCS National Finals in Newcastle. His team mates were thrilled for him and as a team we finished fourth with our joint team score. To top off this fantastic display, Oliver Brett was also voted “Best Trousers of the Day” by his competitors.
At Lincoln College Abigail Hinks had planned a short routine and executed this to a sound level, scoring highly with the marking judges. Abigail then delivered a “free style” routine and finished in fourth position to secure her place at the National Finals.
Alice Richardson also qualified for the female squash with fellow student Cameron Heald playing well in the male squash coming runner-up in the plate competition, but unfortunately didn’t qualify for the National Finals.
This is an outstanding achievement, with the students looking forward in competing against the countries best in April 2016. Overall New College Stamford’s first set of participants that competed in different sports have started well, the quest for reaching the National Finals in Newcastle goes on with more team sports to compete before Christmas.
