Skills for work and living Student, Oliver Farmer, has been gaining valuable experience undertaking a part-time work placement at The Walled Garden Centre at Elton Hall.

When Oli first started, he was under constant supervision, and helping with jobs such as painting and weeding. Since then Oli’s confidence has grown significantly, he is now responsible for mowing the lawns, dismantling sheds and reassembling them as part of a team, he also paints items which require a lot of attention to detail.

Work experience at the centre has helped in break boundaries when dealing with people. He has developed his customer service skills and is now able to deal with customers asking him for help, in which he is always polite and friendly. He interacts with other members of staff and can now order his own lunch, which he could not do without supervision when he first started.

Following his work experience, The Walled Garden Centre now plans on keeping Oli and helping him progress further in his career and aim to mix up his work so he is not always doing work he enjoys (a major part in working life!) and encourage him to make suggestions as he did for The Secret Garden, which was then implemented much to his delight.

Head Gardener Diane Ray says ‘I feel that to stop work experience this year would have a detrimental effect on his ability to find work in the future, he is still learning and he is keen to do so. He is a good young man and is worthy of opportunities that college and work experience give him, it adds value to his life and future’.
