There are course costs associated with some Level 3 to 6 courses which you may need to pay in order to study these courses.

From the 1st August 2016 the government’s Advanced Learner Loans will replace 24+ Advanced Learning Loans.

These government-backed loans are available to help students aged 19 and over pay their course costs for eligible courses at Levels 3 to 6. However if you are aged 19 to 23 and have not already achieved a full Level 3 qualification, you may be entitled to full funding for a Level 3 course.

Repayments don’t begin until you’ve finished your course and are earning over £21,000 per year.

Who qualifies for the loan?

The Advanced Learner Loan is not means-tested and does not require a credit check, but to be eligible for a loan you must be:

  • Aged 19 or over on the first day of your course (there is no upper age limit)
  • Starting your course on or after 1st August 2016
  • Ordinarily a resident in the UK/EU/EFA for at least three years before the start date of your course
  • Enrolling on a full Level 3 to Level 6 course
  • Studying with a college or training organisation in England approved for public funding

What can I use the loan for?

The loan is designed to pay for part of or the full cost of the tuition fee for your full Level 3, 4, 5 or Level 6 course – the loan cannot be used to pay for individual units or awards. Qualifications that you can use the loan for include:

  • A Levels (Up to four)
  • Diplomas and Certificates
  • National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ’s)
