Animal Management (Extended) Diploma Level 3

You will learn through a combination of theory and practical-based learning including written assessments, group discussions, presentations and practical handling.

You will study 15 units overall, three of which will be assessed externally through exams. The remaining units will be assessed through a variety of methods including, practical assessments, written assignments, presentations and portfolios of evidence. You will also do 300 hours of work placement in the second year of the course.

This course allows students to explore the many different careers available in the animal care industry. You will have access to over 100 different species housed in the on-site Animal Studies unit and develop necessary skills in animal management and husbandry. The Animal Studies unit includes a range of small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates, as well as a large outside area housing rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, birds, marmosets and meerkats. Additionally, the unit also benefits from a large practical classroom which is used for demonstrations, animal health assessments and animal training tutorials. You will be taught by lecturers with a range of industry experience such as canine nutrition, zoology, veterinary nursing and behaviour. You may have opportunities to take part in visits to zoos, wildlife centres, farms, kennels, and safari parks as well as industry events with the chance to speak to professionals who currently work within the sector. There are hands on practical elements to this course and steel toe capped boots and sensible clothing is required although tunics will be provided for use whilst working on the Animal Studies Unit. All jewellery and piercings must be taken off during practicals and long hair tied back.
