This apprenticeship prepares you to work on-site, overseeing quality control and working on complex masonry projects.
You will learn to set out and lay bricks, blocks, and other materials to create and repair intricate structures, all while ensuring work aligns with safety, sustainability, and design standards. As a Craft Bricklaying Apprentice, you will collaborate with a range of trades and construction professionals, including carpenters, roofers, site engineers, and architects, to bring projects to life safely and sustainably.
What is covered?
On this Apprenticeship you will gain the knowledge, skills and behaviour required for the following Craft Bricklayer duties:
- Duty 1 Work in compliance with occupational health, safety and environmental requirements to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of self and others at all times.
- Duty 2 Carry out their work in compliance with all current and relevant building regulations and quality standards, where appropriate checking the work of others for compliance.
- Duty 3 Lead the bricklaying team in the delivery of the construction programme including interpreting technical specifications, manufacturers instructions and drawings, including digital information.
- Duty 4 Plan and organise the work site including setting out the work site materials and tools appropriate to the project for self and others.
- Duty 5 Plan the work to obtain optimum environmental, quality and schedule performance from the team, hand tools, power tools and associated equipment.
- Duty 6 Construct complex masonry structures to industry standards and specifications.
- Duty 7 Work effectively on their own and supervise others.
- Duty 8 Maintain a clear and safe worksite at all times, promoting sustainable building practices.
- Duty 9 Carry out continuous professional development to maintain knowledge of current and future developments affecting the role and share with others.
- Duty 10 Proactively collaborate with stakeholders, clients and other construction trades, including programming and technical matters.
- Duty 11 Repair, modify, maintain or replace a variety of masonry types.

Individual employers will set their selection criteria, but it is likely to include 5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English and maths.
An assessor will visit you in the workplace to assess your progress against standards and set SMART objectives.
An Apprentice will work on average 30-37 hours a week, this may vary throughout the year dependent on seasonal trends and workloads. An employed status Apprentice you will:
• Earn a wage – the national minimum wage for Apprentices is £4.15 an hour, although many Apprentices earn more than this. Please note you must be a paid employee of the business, you cannot be self-employed or a volunteer.
• Have a contract of employment – this must be given to you at the start of your employment.
• Get paid holidays – these will be detailed in your contract of employment.
• Receive training – it is crucial to the success of your Apprenticeship that your employer supports you with regular training.
The Apprenticeship standard states you must complete a minimum of 20% off-the-job training which can also include training at Peterborough Regional College and training in the workplace. You will also be expected to build a portfolio and complete tasks on One-file and Google Classrooms.
