Who is it for?

This qualification is designed for learners wishing to develop their understanding of the safe handling of medicines and will help learners to develop a general understanding of different medications and the procedures that must be followed in order to adhere to legislation.

Modern medicines are powerful substances which have beneficial effects for millions of people worldwide. However, inappropriate use or handling of these substances can have severe consequences, including death. Having good up-to-date knowledge of the safe handling of medicines is essential for anyone working with medication.

This is a knowledge-based qualification; achievement will not allow learners to be considered occupationally competent in the administration of medication.

What is covered?

To be awarded the Level 2 Certificate in Understanding the Safe Handling of Medication in Health and Social Care, learners are required to successfully complete 4 units:  

  • Unit 01 Understand medication and prescriptions
  • Unit 02 Supply, storage and disposal of medication
  • Unit 03 Understand the requirements for the safe administrations of medication
  • Unit 04 Record-keeping and audit processes for medication

You need to be aged 19 or over at the start of the current academic year to be able to enrol on one of our Distance Learning courses.  You will also need to be working at or above Level 1 in English. 

We will assess your level of English before we enrol you onto the course and can signpost you to our Functional Skills English courses to upskill if necessary.
