What can this course lead to?

Progression upon successful completion of this qualification, you can enter the workforce as a qualified Level 2 Early Years Practitioner or continue to study for a Level 3 Diploma holding Early Years Educator status. You may work under supervision in a variety of roles such as:

  • Nursery Practitioner
  • Classroom Assistant
  • Pre-school Practitioner

Who is it for?

The aim of this qualification is to provide you with the knowledge and understanding of babies and young children from birth to seven years of age with applied knowledge in the early years. This qualifications content meets the Department of Education’s (DfE) Level 2 full and relevant criteria for a Level 2 Early Years Practitioner in the workforce.

What is covered?

There are 14 Mandatory Units, these are:

  • Roles and Responsibilities of the Early Years Practitioner.
  • Health and Safety of Babies and Young Children in the Early Years.
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusive Practice in Early Years Settings.
  • Safeguarding, Protection and Welfare of Babies and Young Children in Early Years Settings.
  • Understand how to support children's development.
  • Support care routines for Babies and Young Children.
  • Support the planning and delivery of activities, purposeful play opportunities and educational programmes.
  • Promote play in an Early Years Setting.
  • Support Well-Being of Babies and Young Children for Healthy Lifestyles.
  • Support Babies and Young Children to be Physically Active.
  • Support the needs of Babies and Young Children with Special Educational Needs and Disability.
  • Promote Positive Behaviour in Early Years Settings.
  • Partnership working in the Early Years.
  • Support the needs of the child in preparing for school.

The entry requirements are 4 GCSEs at grades 3/D or above, including English and maths.

You will be required to complete a minimum of 250 hours work experience to support your studies You will need to have a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) Certificate with no grounds you are professionally unsuitable to undertake professional practice or placement. We will contact you with more details on how to apply for this once you have been offered a place on your course.

We will review each application on a case-by-case basis to ensure you get a place on the course most suitable for you. One of the ways we do this is through a very effec­tive ‘6 weeks to success programme’ that operates from the first day you start your course. This includes support such as (but not limited to):

  • Allowing you to change courses if you change your mind in the first 6 weeks – subject to availability
  • Moving you between course levels if you are finding your current level too easy / too hard – subject to availability
  • Enrolling you automatically on Maths and English GCSE if you have not passed at a grade 4.
  • One-to-one reviews with your academic tutor to ensure you are progressing and achieving well
