Course overview

Expand your knowledge and skills in programming and computational thinking. You will develop your problem solving skills and gain an understanding of design systems, human and machine intelligence, wireless networks, boolean algebra and data management. You will study:

  • Algorithms
  • Programming techniques
  • Connections for hardware components
  • Functions and system software
  • Wireless networks and online protocols and standards
  • Capturing, selecting, exchanging and managing data to produce information
  • Data types and structures
  • Boolean Algebra
  • Number representation and number bases

This course is approximately 80% exam and 20% coursework.


What Does The Programme Include

You will learn to think creatively, logically and critically through tutor-led discussions, interactive activities, practical exam questions and coursework. This assesses your ability to use the knowledge and skills you have gained to solve or investigate practical problems.

Entry Requirements

The standard requirement for A Levels is 5 GCSEs at Grade 5/​C or above as a minimum for humanities subjects and 6/​B in maths for all science subjects.

Need to re-sit? No problem. If you don’t achieve a Grade 4/​C in GCSE math or English, you’ll resit the exams with us and we’ll help you prepare.

How The Course Will Be Assessed

This is a linear subject which means it is examined externally entirely at the end of year two. There will be end of year exams in June of your first year which will determine your progress and whether you can enter the second year. During the two years of study, you will be regularly assessed under test conditions to practise being able to understand and respond to the questions asked in the correct time allocation so that you are fully prepared for the final exams. There is an assessment calendar for A levels which includes timed assessment every 4 to 5 weeks. Feedback gained from these assessments will help you to develop your skills, target your revision and where necessary enable us to provide additional support. In addition, you will be required to complete an assessed coursework task which accounts for 20% of the final grade. 

Additional Information

You will need to be able to programme effectively in order to achieve a grade, so previous experience is very useful. You should also investigate university and apprenticeship entry requirements in order to select A levels which complement Computing – maths is usually a preferred option.
