Access to Higher Education (Health Professions)

Practical Vs Theory


Course overview

This one year intensive course is for adults with an interest in attending university to study Nursing, Midwifery or other health professions. It is specifically designed for those without formal Level 3, BTEC or A Level qualifications to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to apply to university.

Contact Time (per week):

Monday — Thursday 9.30 — 14.30 Plus one half day per week if you require GCSE English or maths.


What Does The Programme Include

You will learn through a variety of methods including theory and practice, practical science activities, portfolio development, assignments, individual presentations and group work. The course will develop effective organisational and time management skills in order to complete the assessments outside of class time to meet your deadlines.

Entry Requirements

GCSE maths and English at grades C/​4 or above as this is a requirement of university study. You may be able to undertake one of these qualifications whilst studying the Access to Higher Education course at the discretion of your course co-ordinator.

How The Course Will Be Assessed

You will be taught by lecturers experienced in both their subject and in teaching adults.

Assessment will be ongoing using a variety of methods including written, oral, and under exam conditions, in order to prepare you for your future university experience.

Potential Future Career

You will be encouraged to apply to universities by early January and upon successful completion of the course, particularly at merit or distinction level, you should be able to attend university to study in your chosen field.

You will have access to various study facilities including a recently refurbished Library where you’ll have access to books, journals and computers. You will also have tutorial and study support throughout your course to assist you with your studies.
