Practical Vs Theory


Course overview

Expand your knowledge across a range of subject areas in the Animal Care and Management industries including animal health, anatomy and physiology, animal welfare, breed development, animal nutrition, husbandry, ecology and conservation and wildlife populations. Compulsory work placements will support your progression to university or into industry with invaluable practical experience.


What Does The Programme Include

You will learn through a combination of theory and practical based learning including written assesments, group discussions, presentations and practical handling. You will study one health and safety unit which is assessed externally.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at grades 4/​C or above including English, maths and science, or a Distinction in Animal Care Diploma Level 2 including GCSE English and maths at grades 4/​C or above, or industry related experience at the discretion of the interviewer. A Merit overall, with a Distinction in Biology in your first year is required to enter the second year Extended Diploma.

Need to re-sit? No problem. If you don’t achieve a Grade 4/​C in GCSE maths or English, you’ll resit the exams with us and we’ll hep you prepare.

How The Course Will Be Assessed

The majority of the assessment is completed through ongoing assessment and practical handling of a variety of species.

Additional Information

Explore different careers in the animal care industry and study the different types of animals across the globe with a Safari Study Tour in Africa! You’ll also take part in more local visits to zoos, wildlife centres, aquariums, farms, kennels, catteries and safari parks. You will engage with very practical elements and sensible, weatherproof clothing is required, although overalls are provided. Steel toe capped boots and a tunic is essential. Both of these are arranged by the College and more information will be provided at interview and enrolment. All jewellery must be taken off during practicals and hair tied back.

Potential Future Career

On successful completion of this course you can progress on the the HND in Animal Management at University Centre Stamford, other degrees at University or careers such as:

  • Animal Behaviourist
  • Animal Welfare Inspector
  • Pet Shop Manager

  • Understanding and Promoting Animal Health
  • Principles of Animal Biology
  • Animal Anatomy and Physiology

  • Planning and Monitoring Animal Feeding
  • Managing Animal Accommodation
  • Investigative Project in the Land-based Sector
  • Undertake and Review Work Related Experience
