Practical Vs Theory


Course overview

Advance your practical skills and therapeutic knowledge for a successful career in the beauty industry. You will gain industry standard skills working with real, paying clients in our on-site commercial salon. Study a range of treatments including body analysis, mechanical massage, and body and facial electrical treatments.


What Does The Programme Include

Completion of projects/​assignments and homework tasks will broaden your knowledge and understanding in all aspects of beauty therapy.

Initially you will develop your practical skills by practicing treatments on other therapist within your group. You will be expected to receive all treatments whilst you are learning and developing new skills.

Eventually you will progress onto public salon sessions whereby you will be performing a variety of professinal treatments on the general public within a real salon environment, preparing you for industry or higher education.

Entry Requirements

Level 2 Beauty Therapy or equivalent. Good communication skills and a willingness to learn. You must also have a professional appearance and attitude to learning.

Need to re-sit? No problem. If you don’t achieve a Grade 4/​C in GCSE maths or English, you’ll resit the exams with us and we’ll help you prepare.

How The Course Will Be Assessed

Practical assessments will be completed throughout your course as you provide treatments to clients and produce a portfolio of evidence. You will also be assessed through an external exam, graded synoptic test, and a treatment portfolio.

Potential Future Career

On successful completion of this course, you could progress to careers in commercial salons, destination spas or work for hotel chains, cruise ships or airlines. You could also further your studies with a Level 4 qualification in Salon Management, Holistic Therapy or Advanced Beauty Therapy at university.

The units you will study are:

  • Health and Safety in the salon
  • Client care and consultation
  • Body analysis
  • Swedish massage therapy
  • Skin analysis
  • Mechanical massage
  • Anatomy and Physiology for the face and body systems
  • Body electrical treatments
  • Facial electrical treatments
  • Additional beauty training- depending on the trends in industry for the year e.g. Threading, Gel and Acrylic Nails etc.

Course Trips

You will have the opportunity to take part in a number of trips, activities and competitions throughout the year. Previous trips and visits include: Salon International, The Clothes Show, Goldwell Academy London, Steiner Cruise Ships Careers Event, and a number of local employer masterclasses. You will also showcase your new skills in our Annual Fashion Show.
