Practical Vs Theory


Course overview

Learn and develop the basic skills, knowledge and understanding of bricklaying and the construction industry. Through undertaking practical tasks you will understand how to carry out block walling, cavity walling, be able to mix construction materials, and set out basic masonry structures. You will learn and apply the principles of health and safety and develop your employability, maths and English skills to help you achieve the entry requirements for your intended progression.


What Does The Programme Include

You will learn through a combination of theory and practical based learning including written assessments, group discussions, presentations and practical handling.

The knowledge required to support this is learnt through a combination of practical portfolio, workbooks and work packs using on-line and paper based resources. In order to give you an insight into the real working environment you will also be supported to find and undertake a week of work experience.

Entry Requirements

No formal qualifications are required, but you will be required to pass an initial assessment aptitude test.

Whatever your results, we want to assure you that extenuating circumstances will be considered should you not have the grades indicated above. 

We will review each application on a case-by-case basis to ensure you get a place on the course most suitable for you.

One of the ways we do this is through a very effective 6 weeks to success programme’ that operates from the first day you start your course. This includes support such as (but not limited to):

  • Allowing you to change courses if you change your mind in the first 6 weeks
  • Moving you between course levels if you are finding your current level too easy /​too hard
  • Incorporating English and maths GCSE resits in to your timetable if you don’t meet the grades you need
  • One-to-one reviews with your academic tutor to ensure you are progressing and achieving well

How The Course Will Be Assessed

Each unit has a multiple choice end test, as well a practical synoptic test/​s in the workshop. You will receive regular feedback on your performance and help and advice via action plans and extra training to enable you to be successful in your assessments.

Additional Information

The College is proactive in undertaking a variety of community projects which you will be involved in. All materials used to support you in your studies are made available via the College Moodle’ which can also be used to submit your work. You will require a uniform consisting of full length work trousers and safety footwear for the workshop, along with a change of footwear when leaving the workshop, which can be purchased from the college website. You will also need course specific text books and stationary. You will be sent a full list of materials and equipment prior to enrolment.

Potential Future Career

On successful completion of this course, you can progress to the Bricklaying Diploma Level 2 or to job roles such as a Bricklaying Apprentice.

Course Content

You will study the following units:

  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Contribute to setting out and building of masonry structures up to damp proof course
  • Carrying out blocklaying activities
  • Carrying out bricklaying activities
  • Carrying out cavity walling activities
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction

Course Trips

Visits from industry professionals will help you develop your knowledge of the different career opportunities within the trade and provide you with advice from experts in your field. You will gain insight into the latest constuct methods used by various industries and also have the opportunity to take part in various regional and national competitions such as World Skills.

Learning in a practical, hands-on environment helps you achieve your goals and most of all enjoy your time at college. I am planning on undertaking an Apprenticeship to become a qualified Bricklayer.
