Practical Vs Theory


Course overview

Develop your practical skills and experience, and kick-start your career in the bricklaying industry. With practical tasks simulated to match real industry scenarios, you will gain further skills and knowledge of the craft. You will learn how to set out basic masonry structures and how to construct solid walling, incorporating isolated and attached piers, cavity walling, masonry cladding and thin joint masonry. This course is approximately 20% theory and 80% practical. Unit Information You will study a range of units including:

  • Understanding construction technology
  • Understanding information, quantities and communication with others Health,
  • Safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
  • Set out masonry structures
  • Construct solid walling incorporating isolated and attached piers
  • Construct cavity walling forming masonry structures
  • Construct masonry cladding
  • Construct thin joint masonry


What Does The Programme Include

You will learn new skills from experts in the Bricklaying industry. All practical tasks are simulated to match real industry scenarios. You will also complete workbooks and assignments to develop your theory knowledge, and take part in a construction work placement which will give you on-site experience alongside opportunities to complete relevant community projects.

Entry Requirements

A Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying, or equivalent in industry experience.

How The Course Will Be Assessed

Each unit has a multiple choice end test, as well a practical synoptic test/​s in the workshop. You will receive regular feedback on your performance and help and advice via action plans and extra training to enable you to be successful in your assessments.

Additional Information

You will be required to supply your own full length work trousers and safety footwear for the workshop, along with a change of footwear when leaving the workshop. You will also need course specific text books and stationery. You will be sent a full list of materials and equipment prior to enrolment.

Potential Future Career

On successful completion of this course, you can progress to the Bricklaying Diploma Level 3 or to job roles such as a Bricklaying Apprentice, Labourer or Ground Worker. Dependent on your ability, you could also progress to the Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment with a view to progressing to university or in to a managerial apprenticeship.

Learning in a practical, hands-on environment helps you achieve your goals and most of all enjoy your time at college. I am planning on undertaking an Apprenticeship to become a qualified Bricklayer.
