Course overview

This course is designed and delivered by Graphic Designers to fully prepare you for the needs of industry. It will develop the concepts, skills, attitudes, and knowledge associated with graphic design. You will complete a wide range of design briefs covering subjects such as branding, web-design, typography, editorial design and moving image. The design industry is ever changing and this course constantly evolves to recognise this. You will take part in live projects and have the opportunity to compete with other students around the world in a range of competitions and exhibitions.

What Does The Programme Include

You will undertake practical workshops, one-to-one tutorials, seminars, lectures and research strategies to support your development as an independent Designer. An essential feature of your course will be your involvement in professional and work-related design briefs designed to fully prepare you for the industry

Entry Requirements

• A portfolio of work

• UCAS tariff score of 48 points, based on your level 3 studies.

• Many students studying for Foundation Degrees come to us through work-based routes so you can apply for a foundation degree even if you don’t have traditional academic qualifications.

• We welcome applicants with relevant work experience. Foundation degrees are also particularly suitable if you want to qualify while working.

How The Course Will Be Assessed

A range of assessments will enable you to grow in confidence. Assessment methods include coursework, a portfolio of graphic design, research portfolios, essays and presentations.

Fees, Finance & Funding

£6,125 per year. Materials and printing: £200. Trips and visits: £150. Optional residential: £500 — £1,000 depending on location.

Potential Future Career

Successful completion of this course will enable you to progress to the degree programme at the University of Bedfordshire. It will provide you with the qualifications required to top-up’ to a full Bachelor’s Degree at a university of your choice in just one year. Acceptance on to these courses is at the discretion of the institution offering the top-up.

You could also progress to the graphic design industry locally, nationally or worldwide, in areas such as, branding, editorial, digital and web design, packaging and moving image and video.

Work-based Learning

Visits from guest speakers from the industry will develop your knowledge of different career opportunities and gain an insight in to a professional working practice, while developing real-life skills in team working, goal setting and communication, as well as exhibiting your own projects.

You will engage in industry work experience, which can take various forms, for example, work placements, freelance work, exhibitions and entrepreneurialism.

Course Trips

You will undertake trips to London to visit exhibitions and have the opportunity to take part in an overseas trip to support your development. In past years, students have visited cities such as Barcelona and New York.

Competitions

You will be encouraged to engage with various industry competitions for example D&AD, ISTD and YCN.

Resources

You will have access to a large studio space equipped with Macs running the latest Adobe Suite software, print room including screen print table, large format printers and a photo studio. You will also have access to an Academic Support Tutor to assist you with your studies and careers advisors to help you with your future employment.
