Course overview

Achieve a high­ly spe­cial­ist work-relat­ed qual­i­fi­ca­tion and gain the knowl­edge, under­stand­ing and skills you need to enter the health and social care sec­tor. You will study: effec­tive com­mu­ni­ca­tion, equal­i­ty, diver­si­ty and rights, anato­my and phys­i­ol­o­gy, human growth devel­op­ment, work­ing in health and social care and reflec­tive practice.

There will also be the oppor­tu­ni­ty to use your skills in a real-life work expe­ri­ence place­ment. You will be required to com­plete 75 hours work expe­ri­ence as part of this course in year 1, and 100 hours work expe­ri­ence in year 2.


What Does The Pro­gramme Include

There is a wide vari­ety of learn­ing meth­ods includ­ing writ­ten assess­ment, pro­fes­sion­al dis­cus­sion, pre­sen­ta­tions and group and prac­ti­cal activites.

Entry Require­ments

5 GCSEs at grades 4/C or above includ­ing Eng­lish, maths and sci­ence, or Health and Social Care Lev­el 2 qual­i­fi­ca­tion at grade B, with 3 GCSEs at grades 4/C or above in Eng­lish, maths and science.

What­ev­er your results, we want to assure you that exten­u­at­ing cir­cum­stances will be con­sid­ered should you not have the grades indi­cat­ed above. 

We will review each appli­ca­tion on a case-by-case basis to ensure you get a place on the course most suit­able for you.

One of the ways we do this is through a very effec­tive 6 weeks to suc­cess pro­gramme’ that oper­ates from the first day you start your course. This includes sup­port such as (but not lim­it­ed to):

  • Allow­ing you to change cours­es if you change your mind in the first 6 weeks
  • Mov­ing you between course lev­els if you are find­ing your cur­rent lev­el too easy / too hard
  • Incor­po­rat­ing Eng­lish and maths GCSE resits in to your timetable if you don’t meet the grades you need
  • One-to-one reviews with your aca­d­e­m­ic tutor to ensure you are pro­gress­ing and achiev­ing well

How The Course Will Be Assessed

The major­i­ty of assess­ment will be com­plet­ed through writ­ten tasks. Although there are exter­nal­ly marked assess­ments you will not have to take any exams as part of this course.

Addi­tion­al Information

You will require a DBS (Dis­clo­sure and Bar­ring Ser­vice) Cer­tifi­cate with no grounds you are pro­fes­sion­al­ly unsuit­able to under­take pro­fes­sion­al prac­tice or place­ment. We will con­tact you with more details on how to apply for this once you have been offered a place on your course.

Poten­tial Future Career

After suc­cess­ful com­ple­tion of this course you can progress on to var­i­ous Health and Social Care relat­ed degrees at Uni­ver­si­ty or careers such as Nurs­ing, Social Work, Ther­a­py and Fam­i­ly Support.
