Course overview

This course provides opportunities for you to gain industry experience in your specialist area, as well as allowing you to create a professional portfolio of work suitable for employment in the music industry of for further study. Our lecturers are all currently active in the music industry and are experienced in live performance, music production, media and research, so you will have the opportunity to gain first-hand advice from industry professionals.


What Does The Programme Include

You will learn through a series of tutorials, seminars and practical demonstrations. You will develop your critical analysis, evaluation and reflection skills through the creation of a portfolio.

Entry Requirements

• 96 UCAS points typically from A Levels or a Level 3 Diploma in Music, although students from other subject specialisms are encouraged to apply

• Mature students who may not have formal qualifications are encouraged to apply for an interview where you will be considered on your experience, enthusiasm and commitment

How The Course Will Be Assessed

A range of assessment methods will be used including presentations, academic essays and work-based projects. The portfolio that you develop through the completion of these modules can be presented to potential employers within the industry. It will shows both your academic writing and practical abilities, as well as showcasing your understanding of the relationship between theory and practice.

Fees, Finance & Funding

£6,500 per year (part-time £3,250). Specialist kit: £40 (this includes studio quality headphones, hearing protection Cubase Student Edition and a USB stick)

Potential Future Career

Successful completion of this course will provide you with the qualifications required to top-up’ to a full Bachelor’s Degree at university in just one year. This top-up’ can be in any music related subject, such as Music Performance, Music Technology, Music Events Management and Music in Education. Acceptance on to these courses is at the discretion of the institution offering the top-up. You can also progress in to the music industry locally, nationally or worldwide in job roles such as a: Live Sound Engineer, Music Teacher, Post-production Audio Engineer, or Session Musician.

Using the skills they have developed on the course, past students have also progressed to become Freelance Music Producers or write and record their own music.

Work-based Learning

You will be encouraged to develop your own professional portfolio and will be encouraged to use the recording studio facilities accessible to you outside of lesson times. You will have talks from industry professionals and have the opportunity to plan and take part in both internal and external live events. These events include Live Lounge’ style performances, and a Battle of the Bands concert.


You will have access to professional recording studios which feature industry standard mixing consoles with a range of outboard effects, microphones and monitors. You will also have access to our post-production and synth studios, as well as our fully equipped sound-proofed rehearsal rooms. In addition, our facilities include two Mac suites, with all the software you will need to support your studies.

You will also have access to an Academic Support Tutor to assist you with your studies and careers advisors to help you with your future employment.



Not only do I gain real experience through performing at live gigs and festivals, I’m also able to release my own music with the College’s label!
