Course overview

This course is designed for people looking to work in the music industry as a performer. You will gain an understanding of rehearsal skills, solo music performance and group performance, music production, basic recording skills and the music business to develop your skills as a self-employed musician/​freelancer.

 

What Does The Programme Include

You will be working both alone and in small groups in our state of the art rehearsal rooms. Much of your time will be spent preparing material for performances and assessments. There is an expectation that you will carry out individual study outside of your scheduled timetable. Practical assessments take place at local music venues in order to give you real world experience of working in the industry.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at grades 4/​C or above including English and maths at grades 4/​C or above.

Alternatively a Merit in a relevant Level 2 Diploma, and a GCSE grade 4/​C or a pass for FS Level 2 English. You will also be required to audition with your instrument of choice at interview.

A Merit in your first year is required to enter the second year Extended Diploma.

Need to re-sit? No problem. If you don’t achieve a Grade 4/​C in GCSE maths or English, you’ll resit the exams with us and we’ll help you prepare.

Whatever your results, we want to assure you that extenuating circumstances will be considered should you not have the grades indicated above. 

We will review each application on a case-by-case basis to ensure you get a place on the course most suitable for you.

One of the ways we do this is through a very effective 6 weeks to success programme’ that operates from the first day you start your course. This includes support such as (but not limited to):

  • Allowing you to change courses if you change your mind in the first 6 weeks
  • Moving you between course levels if you are finding your current level too easy /​too hard
  • Incorporating English and maths GCSE resits in to your timetable if you don’t meet the grades you need
  • One-to-one reviews with your academic tutor to ensure you are progressing and achieveing well

How The Course Will Be Assessed

There are no exams for this course. Students build a portfolio of work for each of the units and complete written assignments. This leads up to a final major project of your choosing which will determine your final grade.

Additional Information

You will need to purchase an equipment pack at the start of the year costing £30. Units subject to change. You will also be able to participate in running the of the College radio station and record label where you can release your own music through major online retailers such as iTunes. Assessed public performances usually take place in the evening when you will be required to arrange your own transport from the performance venue (either college or a local venue).

Potential Future Career

On successful completion of this course, you can progress to the HNC/​HND in Music at University Centre Stamford or other music degrees at university. You could also progress to careers such as a Live Sound Engineer, Music Promoter, Music Manager, or Session Musician.
