Practical Vs Theory
Course overview
This course is designed for people looking to work in the music industry as a performer. You will gain an understanding of rehearsal skills, solo music performance and group performance, music production, basic recording skills and the music business to develop your skills as a self-employed musician/freelancer.
What Does The Programme Include
You will be working both alone and in small groups in our state of the art rehearsal rooms. Much of your time will be spent preparing material for performances and assessments. There is an expectation that you will carry out individual study outside of your scheduled timetable. Practical assessments take place at local music venues in order to give you real world experience of working in the industry.
Entry Requirements
5 GCSEs at grades 4/C or above including English and maths.
Alternatively a Merit in a relevant Level 2 Diploma, and a GCSE grade 4/C or a pass for functional skills English Level 2. You will also be required to audition with your instrument of choice at interview.
We will review each application on a case-by-case basis to ensure you get a place on the course most suitable for you.
One of the ways we do this is through a very effective ‘6 weeks to success programme’ that operates from the first day you start your course. This includes support such as (but not limited to):
- Allowing you to change courses if you change your mind in the first 6 weeks — subject to course availability
- Moving you between course levels if you are finding your current level too easy / too hard — subject to course availability
- One-to-one reviews with your academic tutor to ensure you are progressing and achieving well
A Merit in your first year is required to enter the second year Extended Diploma.

How The Course Will Be Assessed
There are no exams for this course. You will build a portfolio of work for each of the units and complete written assignments. This leads up to a final major project of your choosing which will determine your final grade.
Additional Information
You will need to purchase an equipment pack at the start of the year costing £40 and pay a consumables fee of £15.
You will also be able to participate in creating online video content and will release your own music through major online retailers such as Spotify and Apple Music. Assessed public performances usually take place in the evening when you will be required to arrange your own transport from the performance venue (either college or a local venue).
Units of study can be subject to change.
Potential Future Career
On successful completion of this course, you can progress to study music degrees at university. You could also progress to careers such as a Accompanist, Performer, Music Director, Song Writer, Events Manager, Music Services

The facilities are great and have opened the doors to the music industry for our band — Among the Citizens. We have had the opportunity to take part in live gigs and have appeared on BBC Introducing.
