Course overview

This course is designed for peo­ple look­ing to work in the music indus­try as a per­former. You will gain an under­stand­ing of rehearsal skills, solo music per­for­mance and group per­for­mance, music pro­duc­tion, basic record­ing skills and the music busi­ness to devel­op your skills as a self-employed musician/​freelancer.

 

What Does The Pro­gramme Include

You will be work­ing both alone and in small groups in our state of the art rehearsal rooms. Much of your time will be spent prepar­ing mate­r­i­al for per­for­mances and assess­ments. There is an expec­ta­tion that you will car­ry out indi­vid­ual study out­side of your sched­uled timetable. Prac­ti­cal assess­ments take place at local music venues in order to give you real world expe­ri­ence of work­ing in the industry.

Entry Require­ments

5 GCSEs at grades 4/C or above includ­ing Eng­lish and maths.

Alter­na­tive­ly a Mer­it in a rel­e­vant Lev­el 2 Diplo­ma, and a GCSE grade 4/C or a pass for func­tion­al skills Eng­lish Lev­el 2. You will also be required to audi­tion with your instru­ment of choice at interview.

We will review each appli­ca­tion on a case-by-case basis to ensure you get a place on the course most suit­able for you.

One of the ways we do this is through a very effec­tive 6 weeks to suc­cess pro­gramme’ that oper­ates from the first day you start your course. This includes sup­port such as (but not lim­it­ed to):

  • Allow­ing you to change cours­es if you change your mind in the first 6 weeks — sub­ject to course availability
  • Mov­ing you between course lev­els if you are find­ing your cur­rent lev­el too easy / too hard — sub­ject to course availability
  • One-to-one reviews with your aca­d­e­m­ic tutor to ensure you are pro­gress­ing and achiev­ing well

A Mer­it in your first year is required to enter the sec­ond year Extend­ed Diploma.

How The Course Will Be Assessed

There are no exams for this course. You will build a port­fo­lio of work for each of the units and com­plete writ­ten assign­ments. This leads up to a final major project of your choos­ing which will deter­mine your final grade.

Addi­tion­al Information

You will need to pur­chase an equip­ment pack at the start of the year cost­ing £40 and pay a con­sum­ables fee of £15.

You will also be able to par­tic­i­pate in cre­at­ing online video con­tent and will release your own music through major online retail­ers such as Spo­ti­fy and Apple Music. Assessed pub­lic per­for­mances usu­al­ly take place in the evening when you will be required to arrange your own trans­port from the per­for­mance venue (either col­lege or a local venue).

Units of study can be sub­ject to change.

Poten­tial Future Career

On suc­cess­ful com­ple­tion of this course, you can progress to study music degrees at uni­ver­si­ty. You could also progress to careers such as a Accom­pa­nist, Per­former, Music Direc­tor, Song Writer, Events Man­ag­er, Music Services
