Course overview

Specialise in music production, sound design, acoustics, audio engineering, recording studio practice and music business. Experience the music production process from beginning to end including planning recording sessions, learning audio engineering techniques as well as mixing and mastering recorded music. You will also gain practical skills through industry based projects using sound design, recording, production and live sound reinforcement with embedded music business practice with the opportunity to work with our Infinity record label and radio station.


What Does The Programme Include

This is a hands-on music production course. Much of your time will be spent in our recording and production spaces, working in small groups and individually. You will have your own DAW and will spend a significant amount of time studying individually. There is an expectation that you will carry out individual study outside of your scheduled timetable. Practical assessments take place at local music venues in order to give you real world experience of working within the audio production industry.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at grades 4/​C or above including English and maths at grades 4/​C or above. 

Alternatively a Merit in a relevant Level 2 Diploma, and a GCSE grade 4/​C or a pass for FS Level 2 English. You will also be required to provide examples or a portfolio of work at interview.

A Merit in your first year is required to enter the second year Extended Diploma.

Need to re-sit? No problem. If you don’t achieve a Grade 4/​C in GCSE maths or English, you’ll resit the exams with us and we’ll help you prepare.

How The Course Will Be Assessed

There are no exams for this course. Students build a portfolio of practical work for each of the units and complete written assignments. This leads up to a final major project of your choosing which will determine your final grade.

Additional Information

You will need to purchase an equipment pack at the start of the year costing £30. Units subject to change. You will also be able to participate in running the of the College radio station and record label where you can release your own music through major online retailers such as iTunes. Assessed public performances usually take place in the evening when you will be required to arrange your own transport from the performance venue (either college or a local venue).

Potential Future Career

On successful completion of this course, you could progress to the HNC/​HND in Music at University Centre Stamford or other music degrees at university. You could also progress to careers such as a Music Producer, Live Sound Engineer, Broadcaster, Music Promoter or Music Manager.

Course Trips

To give you a real experience of the current UK music industry you will have the opportunity to undertake 30 hours work related learning in your chosen field through the placement at local studios, music venues and theatres. You will also have the opportunity to attend visits and trips to industry shows, workshops and seminars at places such as BBC Introducing Live Festival in London (2 Day Residency), BBC Birmingham, PLASA and local music venues. We also provide hands on specialist workshops and guest speakers from a range of professionals currently working in the music industry.
