Course overview

Specialise in music production, sound design, acoustics, audio engineering, recording studio practice and music business. Experience the music production process from beginning to end including planning recording sessions, learning audio engineering techniques as well as mixing and mastering recorded music. You will also gain practical skills through industry based projects using sound design, recording, production and live sound reinforcement with embedded music business practice with the opportunity to work with our infinity record label and radio station.


What Does The Programme Include

This is a hands-on music production course. Much of your time will be spent in our recording and production spaces, working in small groups and individually. You will have your own DAW and will spend a significant amount of time studying individually. There is an expectation that you will carry out individual study outside of your scheduled timetable. Practical assessments take place at local music venues in order to give you real world experience of working within the audio production industry.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at grades 4/​C or above including English and maths. 

Alternatively a Merit in a relevant Level 2 Diploma, and a GCSE grade 4/​C or a pass for function skills English Level 2. You will also be required to provide examples or a portfolio of work at interview.

Need to re-sit? No problem. If you don’t achieve a Grade 4/​C in GCSE maths or English, you’ll resit the exams with us and we’ll help you prepare.

Whatever your results, we want to assure you that extenuating circumstances will be considered should you not have the grades indicated above. 

We will review each application on a case-by-case basis to ensure you get a place on the course most suitable for you.

One of the ways we do this is through a very effective 6 weeks to success programme’ that operates from the first day you start your course. This includes support such as (but not limited to):

  • Allowing you to change courses if you change your mind in the first 6 weeks
  • Moving you between course levels if you are finding your current level too easy /​too hard
  • Incorporating English and maths GCSE resits in to your timetable if you don’t meet the grades you need
  • One-to-one reviews with your academic tutor to ensure you are progressing and achieving well

How The Course Will Be Assessed

There are no exams for this course. Students build a portfolio of practical work for each of the units and complete written assignments. This leads up to a final major project of your choosing which will determine your final grade.

Additional Information

You will need to purchase an equipment pack at the start of the year costing £30. Units can be subject to change. You will also be able to participate in creating online video content and will release your own music through major online retailers such as Spotify and Apple Music. Assessed public performances usually take place in the evening when you will be required to arrange your own transport from the performance venue (either college or a local venue).

Potential Future Career

On successful completion of this course, you could progress to HNC/​HND in Music at University Centre Peterborough or other music degrees at university. You could also progress to careers such as a Music Producer, Live Sound Engineer, Broadcaster, Music Promoter or Music Manager.
