Photography HND

Course overview

The HND in Photography has been devised for and by the photographic industry. 

It aims to help you secure the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to succeed in meeting the needs of an exciting and ever-changing profession. 

The course represents the latest in photographic professional standards as well as providing students with the opportunity to develop the attributes and behaviours that employers demand. 

The course has a strong industry focus and you will be introduced to high profile industry professionals through our visiting speaker programme. Some previous visitors include photographers Edgar Martins, Peter Dench, Toby Smith, James O’Jenkins, Lottie Davies and agency owners Laura Pritchard and Marco Santucci.

After completing their qualification, some previous students have decided to top up’ to a Honours Degree at a University. The HND in Photography has also been aligned with Honours degrees to prepare you for undertaking a top up’ level 6 study if you wish to do this.

 

Entry Requirements

96 UCAS tariff points typically from A Levels or a Level 3 Diploma in an art or design related subject 

Mature students who may not have formal qualifications are encouraged to apply for an interview where you will be considered in relation to your experience, enthusiasm and commitment

How The Course Will Be Assessed

A range of assessment will enable you to grow in confidence and improve your practical and academic skills. The assessment methods have been designed to mirror the needs of industry and should you wish, further study.

An essential feature of your course will be your involvement in practical learning activities, building confidence when working with visual problems and ideas relevant to photography whilst taking professional and work-related practices into consideration. Other teaching and learning methods support this for example through one to one tutorial, seminars, lectures, group critiques and research tasks.

£6,500 per year

Potential Future Career

Successful completion of this course will provide you with the qualifications required to top-up’ to a full BA (Hons) degree at a university of your choice in just one year. Acceptance onto these courses is at the discretion of the institution offering the top-up.

You could progress to the photography industry locally, nationally or worldwide, in roles such as:

Work-based Learning

You will undertake trips to London, visit exhibitions and have the opportunity to take part in an overseas trip to support your development. 

You will be encouraged to engage with various high-profile competitions, community projects and live briefs. You will engage in professionally relevant work experience, which can take various forms for example, work placements, freelance work, exhibitions, pop-up shops and other entrepreneurial activity. Previous students have achieved commendations from international high profile professional briefs and competitions. 

Resources

You will have access to a large studio space equipped with Macs running the latest Adobe Suite software, print room including screen print table, large format printers and a photo studio. You will also have access to a range of digital and analogue photographic equipment including medium format digital back and wet’ dark room for traditional black and white photography.
