Public Services HNC/HND

Course overview

This course is designed for those looking to pursue a career in the Police Force.

You will spend two days a week building your knowledge and theory.

 

What Does The Programme Include

The course will be delivered through seminars and lectures, practical activities including fitness training and in depth independent research project in the second year. Guest speakers will be invited in regularly to work with you and develop vocational knowledge and skills around unit delivery. There will be unit related trips and visits and you will lead and undertake an expedition in year 2.

You will be expected during induction to apply as a Special Constable with Lincolnshire Constabulary who will conduct the training and assessment for this role including fitness training to meet the standards required by Lincolnshire Constabulary.

Entry Requirements

  • 96 UCAS points typically from A Levels or a Level 3 Diploma in Public Services or related subject, although students from other subject specialisms with an interest in policing are encouraged to apply.

How The Course Will Be Assessed

A range of assessment methods will be used including reports, presentations, practical demonstrations, essays, academic posters, journal articles and research projects. Special Constable training will be assessed by Lincolnshire Constabulary.

Course Content

The program will cover a range of public service related subjects based around criminology, psychology, the National and International role and structure of the public services, war, conflict and terrorism and health and fitness. You will study and examine how the services operate at home and abroad and the current issues they face in performing this role. Along with this you will undertake an independent research project of your choice with guidance from your tutor

Work-based Learning

This is a unique course designed to give you academic knowledge, understanding and skills whilst at the same time gaining work based training and learning by training to become a volunteer special constable, to prepare you for entry into the Police Service or other Public Services.

Course Trips

There will be unit related trips and visits arranged by tutors. (These may be subject to Public Services availability). Alongside this there will be guest speakers from Public Services. The second year of the course will involve a student led expedition to the Peak District National Park.

Resources

The course will be delivered across the main campus in our dedicated University Centre Stamford where you will have access to various study facilities including a recently refurbished Library where you’ll have access to books, journals, computers and e‑resources. Free WiFi is available to all students. Some components will be delivered at our Borderville Campus where you will benefit from state-of-the-art facilities to supplement your education. You will also benefit from our on-site gym Stamford Fitness’ and receive discounted membership and fitness classes. Special Constable training will be delivered at our University Centre Stamford by Lincolnshire Constabulary Police Trainers. You will also have access to an Academic Support Tutor to assist you with your studies and careers advisors to help you with your future employment.
