Practical Vs Theory


Course overview

Master your skills and experience in site carpentry through practical tasks to match real industry scenarios. You will gain hands-on, transferable experience through studying a range of units such as: carrying out first fixing operations; carrying out second fixing operations; erecting complex structural carcassing components; installing and maintaining non- structural and structural components; and, setting up and operating cutting and shaping machinery. This course is approximately 40% theory and 60% practical. You will study a range of units including:

  • Analysing technical information, quantities and communication with others
  • Analysing the construction industry and built environment
  • Carry out first fixing operations
  • Carry out second fixing operations
  • Erect complex structural carcassing components
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
  • Install and maintain non-structural and structural components
  • Set up and operate cutting and shaping machinery


What Does The Programme Include

You will complete work books and assignments using online resources. At level 3 you will be expected to demonstrate independent learning to prepare you for employment and continued professional development. You will also take part in a Construction work placement which will give you on-site experience alongside opportunities to complete relevant community projects with New College Stamford.

Entry Requirements

Site Carpentry Diploma Level 2, or equivalent qualification, or relevant industry experience.

How The Course Will Be Assessed

Each unit has a multiple choice core test, as well a practical synoptic test in the workshop. You will receive regular feedback on your performance and help and advice to enable you to be successful in the actual assessments.

Additional Information

You will be required to supply your own full length work trousers and safety footwear for the workshop, along with a change of footwear when leaving the workshop. You will also need course specific text books and stationery. You will be sent a full list of materials and equipment prior to enrolment.

Potential Future Career

On successful completion of this course, you can progress to the HNC in Construction and the Built Environment at University Centre Stamford or other Construction and Engineering degrees at university. You could also progress to job roles such as an Apprentice Site Carpenter or Bench Joiner, Timber Salesman, or Machinist.
