It’s ideal if you’re considering studying politics, sociology, ethics, advertising or journalism at university and is highly regarded by employers in industries including politics, international organisations, the media, government and the civil service.

Who is it for?

This course explores political and social issues, current affairs and how decisions affecting society are made. You will gain an understanding of contemporary political structures and their historical contexts, both within the UK and US. You will also develop critical awareness of the changing nature of politics and the relationships between political ideas, institutions and processes.

What is covered?

Covering news and current affairs from the UK and US, it helps you understand how the UK country is run and develops research, written communication and debate skills. It also helps grow your confidence.

Topics are clearly and logically structured and include: the three traditional ideologies of Liberalism, Conservatism and Socialism and one of either: feminism, nationalism, multiculturalism, ecologism or anarchism.


You will study the following units:

  • Government and politics of the UK
  • Government and politics of the USA and comparative politics
  • Political Ideas

The standard requirement for A Levels at Stamford College is 5 GCSEs at Grade 5/C or above as a minimum for humanities subjects and 6/B in maths for all science subjects.

Minimum grade 6/B or above in English Language or English Literature, plus 6/B in another humanity.

We will review each application on a case-by-case basis to ensure you get a place on the course most suitable for you. We offer an online interview which will explain the A Level programme and also allow for an informal chat with the tutor for each subject before an offer to study with us can be made to you.
