Animal Care Students Gain Expert Industry Insight from Leading Lincolnshire Farrier
Students in the Animal Care department recently welcomed JP’s Farriery for an educational session on the behind the scenes of being a Farrier.
Local expert Jake, founder of JP’s Farriery, visited the campus to share his journey from high-profile apprenticeships to local entrepreneurship.
Jake provided a unique look into the world of farriery, drawing on an impressive professional background. Before returning to Lincolnshire, Jake completed a prestigious apprenticeship in the Cotswolds, where he honed his craft working with an elite clientele, including the horses of high-profile figures such as David Cameron, Jeremy Clarkson, and Harry Redknapp.
The visit offered much more than just a career talk, as Jake provided a captivating live demonstration of the traditional art of blacksmithing. Students watched firsthand as raw metal was transformed into a custom horseshoe from scratch, illustrating the incredible precision, heat control, and physical demand required in the trade.
This hands-on look at the technical side of the job gave the group a newfound respect for the craftsmanship that goes into every single shoe.Throughout the session, students took full advantage of Jake’s presence, asking a wealth of questions about the importance of proper shoeing and the challenges of working with high-performance animals.
We would like to extend a sincere thank you to Jake for his time, his expertise. It was great for our students to learn from someone with such a high level of skill and experience.
