From Student to Specialist: Oisin Mutch McDonald Shares RAF Career Journey at Stamford College
Stamford College recently welcomed back former student Oisin Mutch McDonald, an alumnus of the Level 3 Air and Defence program, to share his inspiring journey from the classroom to his current role as an RAF Cyberspace Communications Specialist.
Oisin returned to the college to provide current students with a firsthand look at the RAF recruitment process, offering a valuable bridge between vocational education and a frontline military career.
Oisin noted that the Level 3 course at Stamford College was instrumental in helping him find his direction. He explained, “I was initially undecided on which career path to take, but the breadth of the program allowed me to explore various sectors before committing to the RAF.” He added, “the course gave me the opportunity to explore all my options and gain the specific insight needed to progress into the chosen field.”
Oisin’s journey into the service began with Phase 1 basic training at RAF Halton. Over the course of ten intensive weeks, he mastered the foundations of military life, including kit drills, first aid, and rifle training. He also underwent Initial Force Protection training, which included essential skills in Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) defence. This initial phase laid the groundwork for the more technical challenges that followed in the next stage of his career.
Following his basic training, Oisin moved on to Phase 2 at RAF Cosford, a nine-month period of specialised technical instruction. Each month of the course was dedicated to a different area of modern communications, ranging from electronics and radio principles to cybersecurity, satellite data communications, and networking. This rigorous training ensured he was fully equipped to handle the complex technological demands of the modern Royal Air Force.
Now four weeks into his professional role, Oisin is actively working to ensure the RAF remains at the cutting edge of technological advances. During his visit, current students had the chance to ask him about his personal challenges, his favourite parts of the journey, and the “tips and tricks” he used to succeed.
His visit served as a powerful reminder of where hard work and the right educational foundation can lead, providing our current Air and Defence students with a clear roadmap for their own future success.
A huge thank you to Oisin for taking the time to return and share his experiences with us!
