From the Frontlines to the Classroom: Stamford College Welcomes RAF Leader to Air and Defence Program
Stamford College is proud to announce the appointment of Mark Hassall as the new Air and Defence College Coordinator, bringing an extraordinary 43 years of Royal Air Force (RAF) experience to the heart of the classroom.
Mark’s arrival marks a significant milestone for the College, as he transitions from a distinguished military career to mentoring the next generation of professionals. His connection to the local area and his industry insights make him an invaluable asset to the College’s mission of bridging the gap between education and the frontlines of the Air and Defence sector.
Mark’s journey began in 1983 as an Aircraft Engineering Apprentice, where he quickly demonstrated technical excellence, qualifying as a Junior Technician in Air Communications and Air Radar. He spent much of his early career serving the iconic Harrier community at nearby RAF Wittering, building a foundation of hands-on expertise that would see him travel across the globe. Throughout his four decades of service, Mark took on a diverse range of high-impact roles, from course design and survival training to leadership instruction and capability development across various headquarters and flying units.
Upon his promotion to Squadron Leader in 2010, Mark’s career evolved into a high-level training and development consultancy. Serving at Joint Helicopter Command and holding key roles at both RAF Cranwell and RAF Wittering, he became an expert in force development and executive leadership.
Mark is eager to translate this lifetime of experience into student success at Stamford College. Regarding his new role, Mark said, “After 43 incredible years in the Royal Air Force, I am thrilled to start this new chapter at Stamford College. My career has been defined by continuous learning and the development of others, and I look forward to using my experience to inspire the next generation. It is a privilege to help these students navigate the complexities of the air and defence sectors with the same passion and discipline that the RAF instilled in me.”
This appointment further strengthens Stamford College’s role as a key signatory of the Air and Defence Career Covenant. This unique partnership between the College, the RAF, and industry leaders like BAE Systems ensures that the curriculum moves beyond the traditional classroom, aligning directly with the high-level technical and disciplinary standards of the UK’s defence sector. With Mark’s experience, the College is able to deliver on this pledge more effectively than ever, developing the Covenant’s goals into a real-world, ‘service-ready’ experience that prepares students for the rigours and rewards of a career in the RAF.
The college is delighted to welcome Mark to the team, knowing that his leadership will offer students a unique, industry-standard perspective that simply cannot be found in a textbook. By integrating his knowledge of modern military requirements with the College’s curriculum, Mark will ensure that students are not only academically prepared but ready for their future careers in the forces.
