Level 3 Fashion Student Wins the Norfolk Art & Design Competition!

16 July 2025

Congratulations to Niamh Brown for winning the Norwich University of the Arts, Norfolk Art & Design Competition.

The Norfolk Art & Design Competition is a highly regarded annual event that showcases outstanding creative work from Sixth Forms and College students across Norfolk and beyond. Now in its eighth year, the competition received over 200 entries from across England, with just over 50 works shortlisted for the final exhibition.

Niamh impressed the judges with her final garment, which blended deep cultural research with bold, modern tailoring. Her design drew influence from traditional Turkish Salvar trousers – created for ease of movement – and the elegant shape of the Albanian fustanella, both of which informed the silhouette of the skirt. This was paired with a sharply tailored suit jacket that nodded to the Spring/Summer 2025 YSL collection and referenced the powerful styling of 1980s women’s suits, long seen as a symbol of empowerment. The result was a confident, contemporary ensemble designed to challenge societal gender norms and promote self-expression through fashion.

Niamh’s winning piece was featured in a public exhibition at NUA’s St George’s Building, a venue known for its specialist creative studios and workshops.

Also representing the college was Rose Cuthbert, whose work was successfully shortlisted and exhibited at the same event. Her creative vision and execution stood out among a highly competitive field of emerging young artists and designers.
