Colleges’ National Green Week 2026: Inspire Education Group highlights sustainability leadership
Inspire Education Group (IEG) is marking the Association of Colleges’ National Green Week (20–24 April 2026) by showcasing how colleges are helping to tackle climate change, reduce their environmental impact, and prepare students for careers in the growing green economy.
As the UK works towards net zero, colleges like Peterborough College and Stamford College are playing a key role – giving students the skills, knowledge and confidence to be part of a more sustainable future.
IEG’s sustainability work was recognised nationally, winning the Sustainability Award at the 2025 Peterborough Telegraph Business Awards and a Silver Green Apple Award. The Group was also commended by Investors in the Environment for a decade of green accreditation.
The Centre for Green Technology at Peterborough College officially opened in May 2025. It includes training in EV charging, retrofit methods, renewable energy and sustainable construction, including plumbing and electrical systems. The building itself models low- carbon design and features exposed construction elements for student learning. Students were actively involved in the build through site visits and work experience placements.
The Stamford College Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) building continues to support green construction skills. The Group introduced new green curriculum elements and expanded employer engagement, including with Worcester Bosch, Rolec EV and Quantum. Across both campuses, IEG is embedding sustainability into its curriculum, operations, and procurement, aligning its practice with local and national net-zero goals.
Through strong partnerships with employers and local authorities, IEG is also helping to address skills gaps in key areas such as renewable energy, low-carbon retrofit, and electric vehicle systems, ensuring students are ready for the jobs of the future.
Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce said:
“From a Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) perspective, IEG’s achievements provide a clear example of how education providers can respond to employer-identified skills needs, particularly in green technologies, low-carbon retrofit, renewable energy, and electric vehicle systems. The Chamber Skills Team enjoys a strong relationship with IEG, collaborating on projects that support regional skills development and workforce readiness. Green skills are a major focus for the team, and initiatives like the Centre for Green Technology highlight how FE and HE providers are helping to build a future-ready, sustainable workforce for Peterborough and the wider region.”
Colleges National Green Week is a chance to celebrate the progress being made across the sector — and the important role colleges continue to play in building a greener future.
