Stamford College Early Years Students Put Child Development Theories to the Test
Early Years students at Stamford College recently stepped into the shoes of young learners to test a cornerstone of child development theory firsthand.
By putting Lev Vygotsky’s “More Knowledgeable Other” (MKO) concept into practice, the students explored how guided instruction directly enables individuals to master new and complex skills that they might not easily achieve on their own.
To experience the theory in action, learners engaged in a hands-on origami workshop, using step-by-step video tutorials as their “More Knowledgeable Other.” Guided by these visual tools, students successfully mastered the precise art of paper folding to craft intricate paper boxes, hearts, and crowns. By working through the step-by-step instructions, the class experienced how scaffolded guidance turns challenging tasks into achievable successes.
This practical approach provided students with deep, firsthand insight into how children learn, acquire skills, and build confidence through structured support. The valuable understanding of scaffolding techniques and child development theories gained during the session will directly inform their practical work as they step out into professional Early Years settings.
